What U (pan symbol) means
On Dacor Discovery and Heritage induction cooktops, such as the DYTT305N, HICT365BG and HIPR30S, a U-shaped symbol is the cross-section of a pan. It appears when you set a heat level but the cooktop does not detect a pan on the zone. This is not an error. The cooktop is telling you that induction needs cookware to work, so no heat is produced until a suitable pan is in place.
Common causes of U (pan symbol)
- No pan on the cook zone
- Pan off-center or too small for the zone
- Cookware that induction cannot detect
- A zone sensing problem if good pans are never detected
1. Place a pan on the zone you set and check that it sits flat and centered. 2. Use a pan with a magnetic base. A small magnet should stick to its bottom. 3. Make sure the pan is not too small for the zone. 4. If the symbol stays with a suitable pan in place, schedule service.
- Whether a pan that works on another zone is ignored on this one
- Whether the coil or its sensing circuit needs testing
- Which part is needed, quoted in writing before work

Why does a U-shaped symbol appear on my cooktop?
It means a heat level is set but no pan is detected. Induction heats only when suitable cookware sits on the zone, so the symbol reminds you to add a pan or center the one you have.
My pan is on the zone and I still see the symbol. Why?
The pan may be aluminum, copper or glass, which induction does not detect, or it may be too small. Test with a magnet. If a magnetic pan is still ignored, the zone needs testing.
Is this symbol a sign of damage?
No, it is normal behavior. These Discovery and Heritage models are older cooktops still in many homes, and we repair them if the symbol keeps showing even with proper cookware.
