A column refrigerator that slowly loses its chill is rarely a sudden failure. It is more often a part wearing out over months. Here are five signs worth noticing early, and what each can and cannot tell you.
1. Milk Spoils Sooner Than Expected
A temperature creeping up a few degrees is easy to miss. Stand an appliance thermometer in a cup of water on the middle shelf, then read it the next morning. This shows whether the problem is real, but not which part is causing it.
2. Frost on the Back Wall
Frost where the cold air comes in can point to an airflow problem, a door that does not seal, or a defrost issue. We check each before suggesting a part.
3. Water Pooling Under the Crisper
A blocked defrost drain sends melt water into the cabinet. Sometimes a simple clearing helps, but a repeat blockage usually means something else is adding moisture.
4. A Compressor That Starts and Stops Often
Short cycles can come from a dirty condenser, a failing fan, or a control problem. We cannot name the part from the noise alone.
5. The Door Gasket Has Gone Soft
Pinch a strip of printer paper in the door at a few spots around the frame. If it slips free with no drag, the seal has gone soft. In older units, a worn gasket is common and often an easy repair.
What to Do Before We Arrive
Move perishables to another refrigerator if you can, clear the vents, and note the model label. On older Dacor columns we also check the condenser area for dust, since heat and Houston humidity make the unit work harder. If the cost of repair approaches the value of the unit, we say so. See the Dacor refrigerator repair page for what we service.
