Dacor Cooktop Gas Smell: When to Stop and Call

A gas smell around a Dacor cooktop is never something to wait on. Below is the order of steps, what is normal and what needs a plumber.

Smelling gas by your Dacor cooktop means cooking stops now. Turn the knobs off and let fresh air in. The steps below come first, and afterward they help sort out whether the cooktop or the supply line is to blame.

Let everyone in the household know what happened, and stay out until the odor has cleared. If anyone feels dizzy or ill, get outside into fresh air and call for help.

First Steps

  1. Turn every burner knob to off.
  2. Stay away from light switches, lighters and phones while you are near the stove.
  3. Open windows and doors.
  4. Close the gas valve to the cooktop if you can reach it safely.
  5. If the odor is strong, walk outside and call your gas utility from there.

What Might Be Harmless

A brief smell right as a burner lights can come from a delay in ignition. It should clear in seconds. A smell that lingers, or appears when nothing is on, is a different matter and needs attention.

What We Look At

Once the smell is gone and you have confirmed with your utility that it is safe, we can inspect the burner valves, the connectors beneath the unit and the igniters. We do not use an open flame to find a leak.

What Belongs to a Plumber

A leak at the pipe, the shutoff valve or the flexible connector is work for a licensed plumber. Conversion kits between natural gas and propane also go to a licensed plumber.

Older Cooktops

Seals and valves wear with the years. A cooktop that is 15 years old may need parts that have become hard to track down, and we will say so.

When the area is safe, see our cooktop repair page. Book online or give us a call, and send a photo of the rating label if you can.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
