When smoke lingers in the kitchen, the filters are usually coated with grease, not the motor worn out. Frequent frying and steam in Houston homes load them quickly, so a simple routine pays off.
A hood works best when it is switched on before you start cooking and left on for a few minutes afterward. That habit clears steam and grease vapor before they settle on cabinets and the filters.
How Often to Clean
Heavy fry-and-sear cooking calls for a monthly look at the filters. With lighter meals, every second or third month is enough. A greasy film you can feel with a finger is the signal.
How to Clean Metal Filters
- Turn the hood off and give the bulbs time to cool.
- Release the filters from the frame.
- Soak them ten minutes in hot water with a little dish soap.
- Work a soft brush over the mesh, then rinse.
- Let them dry fully before they go back in.
Wipe the Surfaces
Use a mild cleaner on stainless steel, following the grain. Skip abrasive pads, which scratch the finish.
Limits of Filter Cleaning
If the blower is noisy, vibrates or barely moves air after the filters are clean, the issue may be the fan wheel, the motor or the control. A blocked duct can also reduce flow, and filter cleaning will not fix that.
Charcoal Filters
If your hood recirculates air instead of venting outside, the charcoal filter is a replacement item, not a washable one.
Older Hoods
Plenty of Dacor hoods in Houston kitchens have passed the ten-year mark. We repair motors, switches and lights where parts exist. See our range hood repair page for details.
